Windows 10 was released July 29th and many Windows users qualify for a free upgrade to the new OS, thanks in part to Microsoft's push to get a billion devices running Win10 within a few years.
But should you be in a rush to upgrade? Here are a few caveats:
- You cannot run Internet Explorer 9 on a Windows 10 PC. It comes preloaded with IE11 and you have the option to unload it, keep it, but you cannot replace it with an earlier version. Which means if you have software dependent on IE9, you should wait on updating.
- Not all applications are Windows 10 compliant yet.
- This is the first release of a new MS Operating System, so there will always be a few bugs to work out.
- If you have Windows 8 and use the Media Center, Windows 10 does not support it and will actually remove it during the upgrade.
Lifehacker has a good article, Should I upgrade to Windows 10?, for more detailed info and Spiceworks has a handy chart on if you qualify for a free upgrade. Infoworld also lists 10 reasons you should upgrade to Windows 10.
Windows 10 looks like it has great features, but investigate your current system requirements thoroughly before upgrading.
